With an increasing number of people reporting substance use disorder (SUD), health experts say it’s important to know trends of the disease. Now, a new map reveals which states have the most people receiving SUD treatment.
Ophelia, an online addiction treatment platform, used data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to create the map.
In Washington D.C., SAMHSA estimates that approximately 23%, or nearly one in four residents, grapple with addiction—the highest prevalence in the nation. Despite this alarming statistic, the district has one of the lowest percentages of residents receiving treatment.
Vermont, which ranks third-highest in the nation for SUDs, also has the third-highest rate of people receiving treatment for the disease. West Virginia, Maine, and Arizona also have high rates of people undergoing treatment, yet their prevalence of substance use disorders remains relatively average.
Texas and Hawaii show both low rates of SUDs and low concentrations of residents in treatment.
If you would like to find out more information about the state you live in, SAMHSA has gathered information about each state and shared it in a state profile survey.
Nearly 49 million Americans ages 12 and older – more than 1 in 6 – struggle with addiction, according to SAMHSA.
