BECKLEY, W.Va. — Police in southern West Virginia are investigating after a child reportedly found a vial labeled “fentanyl” among their Halloween candy.

According to the Beckley Police Department, the child discovered the vial, which contained an unknown substance, in their trick-or-treat basket on Halloween night. The family reported it to authorities, and no one was injured.

Investigators have since traced the prescription fentanyl vial to a local medical facility. Police said the facility is fully cooperating and that the incident does not appear to be connected to Halloween or any attempt to harm the public.

“To preserve the integrity of the investigation,” police said, the facility’s name is not being released.

The vial has been sent to an accredited laboratory for testing to confirm what the substance is.
