Actress Hayden Panettiere died of an accidental overdose that involved fentanyl and four other drugs, the Greenville County, South Carolina, coroner’s office said, according to ABC News.
The coroner’s office said four other drugs were found in Panettiere’s system: 4-ANPP, a byproduct of fentanyl production; alprazolam, sold under the brand name Xanax and commonly used to treat anxiety and panic disorders; methocarbamol, sold as Robaxin and used to treat muscle spasms; and quetiapine, sold as Seroquel, an antipsychotic medication also used to treat sleep problems.
Fentanyl was the most likely of the drugs to have caused an overdose death, the coroner’s office said. An autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to Panettiere’s death, according to the coroner’s office.
Panettiere, 36, best known for her role on the ABC drama “Nashville,” died in August after she was found unresponsive at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Drug Enforcement Administration is investigating whether the fentanyl originated in South Carolina or whether Panettiere brought it with her from California, sources told ABC News.
Panettiere was remembered over the weekend at a memorial service in Malibu, California, her representative confirmed to ABC News. Her “Nashville” co-star Connie Britton attended, along with other celebrities including Evan Ross and Ruby Rose, according to photos from the event.
