RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Denver man has been sentenced to 45 years in federal prison for leading a large-scale drug trafficking operation in western South Dakota.
Juan Sertuche, 43, was sentenced to 40 years for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, plus an additional five years on a firearm charge. The sentences will be served consecutively.
A federal grand jury indicted Sertuche in June 2025, and he was convicted on all counts following a three-day jury trial in January.
According to court documents, Sertuche led the operation from 2002 through September 2023, supplying roughly 500 pounds of methamphetamine and more than 33,000 fentanyl pills to distributors in the Rapid City and Pine Ridge areas.
In one instance, law enforcement stopped couriers traveling from Denver to Rapid City at Sertuche’s direction and seized 19 pounds of methamphetamine intended for distribution.
Sertuche was arrested in September 2023 during a traffic stop in Jackson County, where authorities found about 1,500 fentanyl pills in his possession.
Prosecutors say Sertuche continued to direct the operation after his arrest, instructing others to collect money and travel to Denver to obtain more drugs. He also directed an associate multiple times to transport guns tied to his drug activity to be traded for methamphetamine.
Authorities recovered the weapons before they could be used in those exchanges, including two fully automatic machine guns.
The case was investigated by multiple agencies, including the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Wyoming State Highway Patrol and the North Metro Denver Drug Task Force.
