High school student finds fentanyl-filled syringe on sidewalk in Gettysburg, SD

Gettysburg, S.D. – The Gettysburg, South Dakota Police Department is warning parents to remind children about the dangers of suspicious items. The warning comes after police say a high school student found a syringe on a sidewalk in town.

The syringe was turned over to police. Testing confirmed the liquid inside contained fentanyl.

Police say if children come across something that looks dangerous, they should stay away and contact law enforcement.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid. Just 2 milligrams — about the size of a pencil tip — can be deadly, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. It is also the leading cause of overdose deaths in the United States.
