TURNER COUNTY, S.D. – A traffic stop in Turner County led to the seizure of approximately 26 pounds of raw marijuana and the discovery of methamphetamine residue on packaging material and throughout the vehicle, according to the Turner County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said a deputy conducted the traffic stop during the early morning hours of Aug. 1 and discovered the large quantity of marijuana. The Yankton County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit assisted with the investigation.

The seizure comes as concerns continue nationwide about the safety of illicit drug supplies and the possibility of marijuana being mixed with other substances.

Emily’s Hope has previously reported on cases involving marijuana contaminated with other drugs, including fentanyl. Last year, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley issued a warning after a suspected case of fentanyl-laced marijuana was reported in eastern South Dakota.

“This is an especially dangerous time, and the public is encouraged not to engage in the use of marijuana and controlled substances, and if after taking these controlled substances and feeling sick, immediately seek medical attention,” Jackley said at the time.

Across the country, officials have recently reported cases involving marijuana products containing other dangerous substances,  including a man in West Virginia facing charges for allegedly trying to sell a juvenile fentanyl-laced marijuana and an Atlanta dad who says his teenage son died from a fentanyl-laced THC vape.
