CLAYMONT, Del. — Authorities in Delaware are warning the public after more than 14,000 bags of fentanyl were discovered in a wooded area.

According to New Castle County Police, a young adult and a juvenile were walking through the woods around 5:30 p.m. on April 12, when they came across two grocery bags. After looking inside and suspecting the contents were illegal narcotics, they returned home and told a family member, who contacted police.

Officers responded and determined the bags contained suspected narcotics. The items, described as two large packages, or “bricks,” were taken to police headquarters for testing.

Authorities later confirmed the substance was fentanyl. A count revealed a total of 14,088 individual bags within the two packages.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, as little as 2 milligrams of fentanyl, about the size of a pencil tip, can be deadly.

Police are reminding the public not to touch suspected narcotics, to avoid disturbing the area and to keep a safe distance. Anyone who encounters possible drugs should contact law enforcement so trained personnel can safely handle the situation.
