SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A 25-year-old Sioux Falls, South Dakota man has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for distributing a fentanyl pill that led to a woman’s death. Johnny Allen Neighbors was convicted of Distribution of a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death after knowingly providing the lethal pill to an adult woman on Jan. 21, 2023. She ingested the pill and later died.

“This is yet another example of the lethal nature of fentanyl,” said Alison J. Ramsdell, U.S. Attorney for the District of South Dakota, in a press release. “In an environment where just two milligrams of fentanyl can lead to death, it is imperative that we educate our loved ones on the dangers of fentanyl so that we can avoid the tragic loss of life.”

Neighbors was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2023 and pleaded guilty on Oct. 4, 2024.

In addition to his prison sentence, Neighbors was ordered to four years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
