Yankton man sentenced to 22 Years for fentanyl distribution that seriously injured victim

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A 33-year-old Yankton man has been sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for distributing a fentanyl pill that resulted in serious injury. Matthew Williams was convicted of distribution of a controlled substance resulting in serious bodily injury.

On March 17, 2022, Williams knowingly gave a pill containing fentanyl to a drug customer, who ingested it and overdosed. Emergency responders were called to the scene and administered Narcan, which revived the victim.

Williams was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2023 and pleaded guilty in April 2025.

The case was investigated by the Sioux Falls Police Department and prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Connie Larson and Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth A. Ebert-Webb.
