Using coupons to give back to a local nonprofit

Downtown Sioux Falls is offering deals while also giving back to a local nonprofit.

‘Tis the season to shop in downtown Sioux Falls, whatever the weather.

“The snow kind of cut down on some of the traffic Friday and Saturday, but we still had a really good day. There were lots of locals out and about,” Sticks and Steel owner Terri Schuver said.

Terri Schuver owns Sticks and Steel, a gift store at 8th & Railroad Center. It’s one of more than 20 local businesses in this year’s Downtown Gives Coupon Book.

DTSF organizes the coupon book and gives the dollars earned to a local nonprofit. On average, Downtown Gives raises about $8,000 per year, and this year those dollars are going to Emily’s Hope.

“We had a number of amazing nonprofits that applied this year. But the Emily’s Hope mission just speaks to specifically downtown Sioux Falls and just some of the struggles that we go through and all of the people that we’re trying to help, specifically with our ambassador program in downtown, just to connect people to services. And so I think our retailers just really felt strongly about Emily’s Hope and just what they’re doing to try to prevent stigma with substance abuse,” Sietsema said.
