LACEY, Wash. – A puppy is recovering after firefighters in Washington state used Narcan to revive it following a suspected fentanyl exposure.

According to a social media post by the Lacey Fire Department District Three, crews found the small, unresponsive puppy inside a vehicle where fentanyl was present. Firefighters administered Narcan—a medication that reverses opioid overdoses—and were able to revive the animal.

“It’s not every day we use Narcan on a four-legged patient-but our teams are ready for just about anythings,” the post reads.

While Narcan is more often used on people, Emily’s Hope has reported on other cases of authorities reviving pets with the medication.

Emily’s Hope is currently distributing free naloxone (Narcan) across South Dakota. In partnership with South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, the Department of Social Services, and the Department of Health, the organization plans to install 35 additional naloxone boxes across the state in the coming year. A list of locations or a request form for a free naloxone box can be found on the Emily’s Hope website.
